A 406 that is strong from idle to 5500 will be hard to beat on driveability and fun. A 383 is not going to be much different as far as fun up to 5500. This was one of the (unfortunately) rare times a car rag actually did tests over several manufacturers. They took a garden variety 500 HP 383 SBC and started swapping intakes.

After testing Arties engine, I'm convinced that the solid roller 383 has more potential than 500hp/500 lb/ft still at a streetable rpm. I'd like to do a 393 with an aftermarket block 4.155 bore and a 3.625" stroke; the XR274 roller cam and 2.08" valve AFR heads. I think that's a good happy balance between the 406 and the 383.

Before you say build a 4 cylinder or V6 let's just say it has to be a SBC. A smaller bore/ longer stroke vs. a bigger bore/ shorter stroke of about the same displacement (ie. 305 vs. 302) should get better mileage.
