All depends on what your idea of “fun” is. Vanilla servers are well… vanilla. If you are looking for a more purist gaming experience they are good. It becomes more survival than pvp most of the time. In dayZ it only takes one oversight to lose everything, from your whole base to the character you’ve survived 200 hours on or the gun you are carrying because you dropped it in some grass on accident. It's almost always wiped when there is a new update, so it would be reasonable to expect .60 to be wiped when .61 releases. I really wouldn't worry that much about your gear though, it's meaningless in the long run.

I feel really bad and unmotivated. The update policy and the need to wipe a server is for me a great disadvantage. I have fought several weeks to get a lot of stuff and I have survived.
