Just came across thus article, apparently Tom's of legit players are catching bans and some of them even perma bans with no prior warnings. Sounds like pogos anticheat system is on the fritz.

The only way you'll both get banned at the same time is if you both get reported at the same time (I've been reported and no action taken still) or a ban wave for all or many pgsharp users. Warnings are per Pogo account, not per pgsharp account. I assume you and your friend aren't sharing a pokemon go account. I mean I didn’t know there was a ban wave I’ve used it as normal for few weeks no issue. But I go and stick at a place for a few days whenever I transport and I never do gym battles. Only one of my accounts to ever get suspended was one I was doing a lot of Battles on lol
