The first step to get this fixed would be scan with a compatible scan tool to see what codes have been set. I got the flashing D while on a road trip in North Dakota. I stopped by a local AutoZone and they were able to pull the code (P1740) for me and it was for a failed 4th gear switch. Get the car scanned and get the DTC. Also whining noise has a lot to do with worn gears inside the transmission not making proper contact.
