From what I see with guys pushing stock blocks with power adders is that the amount of cylinder wall thrust over duration of time also plays a big role in relative block life as well. So, in that respect an engine that makes 600 ft/lbs at 3,500 rpm is much less abusive than an engine that sees 470 lb/ft at 7,000 rpm.

But some were rated higher depending on it's application. 1989 was not a high horsepower maybe 230 or torque motor if I recall correctly. You could just have that trans freshened up to handle new motor.

5-speed trans of any year holds up to about 250wtq. Not hp. Stock connecting rods inside the block also only hold to about 250wtq. For example, a Rotrex powered block could make 250whp but only around 190-200wtq and never pop the block or the trans.
