Butler's campus is safe. Rocky Ripple has some poverty (I've seen it up close) but I've never felt unsafe there. What I would avoid is further south, around Crown Hill and 38th/Meridian. On the Eastside, you would be in Southern Broad Ripple, which I think is fairly safe but I wouldn't be surprised if cars get broken into from time to time.
