Mec 600 jr old style.
Help with Mec 600 JR. I am trying to load 16 ga on a Mec 600 JR. The shot loading is not working as it should. I am using #6 shot, 1 1/8 oz. The charge bar does not slide easily to the right to drop the shot. It has to be forced. Also the shot does not alway drop completly into the hull. When I move the hull the rest of the shot falls.
The new MEC 600 JR's come with all the parts necessary to convert from 2 1/2" to 3" (assuming you order it set up for 2 1/2"). Item #MC63 is needed to convert a press currently set up for 3-1/2" to 3" along with the correct gauge die set.The reason for the cracked or tore hulls is because of the gun you are shooting. A .410 shotgun that has a very wide open chamber or very tight chamber will cause the shell to expand or shrink and it will burn the pedals/crimp at the end of the shell. This usually will cause that crack and deformation when you go to crimp the shell.Open the MEC 600 Jr Mark V loading press. Remove any shells from the machine. Locate the pressure adjustment screw located on the base of the press near the shell plate. Turn the adjustment screw clockwise to increase the wad pressure or counterclockwise to decrease the wad pressure, a quarter to a half turn at a time.

I picked up a Mec 600 Jr second hand. It came with an assortment of wads and Winchester AA hulls, the newer HS type. I have a few problems with my 600 Jr. I have loaded about 200 shells on it thus far. My recipe: cb 4118-12b Windjammer. 29 bushing drops 17.2 grains Hodgdon Clays. CCI209 primers. Since I replaced that bar with a Universal Charge Bar, I've since reamed the holes larger on the fixed bar, then drilled and tapped holes from the bar ends.Die Conversion Kits for Mec 600 Jr. I have an old (pre 82) Mec 600 Jr in 12 gauge that I'd like to convert to 20 gauge. Looking at the parts list on Mec's website the conversion kit is slightly more than $100 (might as well buy new for that price) for this model. The conversion kit they list for the Mark V is $80ish.Set it re-size to .806 to .807, and you will be just right. That's not much of a change, but it will relieve a lot of stress on the collet. As far as the sizing ring on the 600 jr., just take what it gives and if they fit OK, then no problem. If it isn't sizing enough, then replace the ring. It's cheap.The MEC 600 Jr. Mark 5 is a basic, single stage press, that will produce superb reloads, and last your lifetime, and probably that of your Grandkids, if taken care of. The learning curve is short and the production rate will get to about 200 reloads per hour, once you get your rythm down, and are well versed with the machine.

At station 4 the crimp starter is updated and the new one works pretty well, but then so did the old one. The final crimp station is also updated but again, not significantly better than the old version. About the only thing on the new versin 600 Jr. that is nice is the pre crimper, as it changes out from 6 to 8 in only a couple seconds.

I have 600 Jr. die sets for all of the gauges and use them as needed. The die sets are easy to switch out. It usually takes about 10 minutes once you get up on the learning curve. Since, I have other loaders, I primarily use the 600 Jr. for 3" .410's and turning out only a few loads in a given gauge - usually for testing.

The only difference of any matter is the old dies are steel, the new dies are Dupont Zytel. The new dies work as well as the steel ones ever did. The "modern" crimp starter wears out, the old one never did, but is less finely adjustable than the new one.
