Our motor fowls the plugs and then it's of course hard to start and does not run really well for quite a long time of full throttle. Original rectifier is on the top and the rectifier/regulator I added is mounted under the starter. I selected a rectifier/regulator from a newer model Merc. Yes the XR2 would rev between 5500 to 6000 compared to 5000-5500 of the standard blackmax. It is slightly ported, 200hp exhaust and jetted carbs. It will give you a slightly better performance then the black max engine if it is still in good shape. Let me know if you have further questions. Noel.
