He's actually pretty durable with his Quas minibuffs and early-game consumables in the early game phase. A lot of people don't really bother funneling resources to him any more as an average Invoker with enough levels can already do a lot with damage spells like Chaos Meteor(Meatball!) and a Deafening Blast. Pre 9.12 Ryze was a battlemage, with low range and mobility but high durability, making him a strong duelist and splitpusher. Current Ryze is a squishy burst mage who relies on a team frontlining for him. He's actually stronger for soloq now than he was before the 9.12 changes, but I don't enjoy his new playstyle nearly as much.

As far as worth he's a safe blind pick, and he has a freedom to build what he wants more than most champions. He can fit into a lot of comps and he can carry.
