On the other hand, its value can rise to $85,000 if the penny is in an uncirculated, pristine form. Unlike Philadelphia, Denver was not minting Belgian pieces. Legislation was passed authorizing the coins to be made from steel and zinc instead. The 1941 penny was the last to be produced in copper before the new legislation took effect. The pennies minted in 1942 look quite different, appearing silver in color instead of red or brown.
