The early 4520's had air cleaner problems and serious injector problems but that was staightened out early. The 4520 was the first J.D. with a turbo charger. J.D. built the 4020 and needed a bigger tractor so they built the 4520 in 1969 and 1970 they turbocharged the 404 and made other improvements to handle the extra horsepower.

Thats usually a linkage issue. Ours do it also. Usually if u go to reverse then back forward it will completley come out of park. Not saying it cant happen but the 4020 is a very well built tractor and the powershift transmission in it is practically indestructible. All cracked/popped adequately, however, 2 of the injectors test pattern was not real good if pressure was added slowly so I replaced them. Aug 2, 2011 · The 4010 and VERY early (IIRC, pre-'65) 4020 tractors DO have a 3rd reverse. The later early models and on only have 2 reverse gears that are sped up. The the early ones, 1st reverse is the same speed as 3rd forward, 2nd reverse is like 5th and 3rd reverse is like 7th. So, 3rd reverse is 12mph. Great for plowing snow. :rock.
