When you approach the garage with your car, the car with MyQ sends the OPEN command via cell via Tesla to your home Wi-Fi. The MyQ receives the signal over home Wi-Fi and send the OPEN-DOOR command to your garage door opener (GDO).

Homelink is better IMO. Another aspect to think about is that MyQ won't work if your MyQ is unreachable due to lack of power, internet outage, MyQ service outage, or wifi/networking issue. My Chamberlain garage door opener has MyQ built in and also has battery backup.
