Sometimes it will allow me to still drive and sometimes it will die and throw up the battery light. I am always able to restart my car after it dies. The lights do not always come on. If I hit the rear diff switch the REAR DIFF light goes out and then ABS and SLIP come on. I can hear the 4wd engage both high and low when I turn it on with my door open.

It's not supposed to be used off-road. The system that the newer Xterras have that is useful off-road is ABLS, which stands for Active Brake Limited Slip.

The slip light can mean different things at different times. If you are in dirt in 4wd and loose traction, the slip light will flash. This is the ABLS doing it's thing by grabbing the slipping wheel to transfer power to the opposite wheel.
