It’s just that his relation to Golb wasn’t adequately set up enough for me to easily accept this sudden dramatic shift in his character. Also, even if all of this makes sense in canon, I personally find it unsatisfying that this is what the relationship between Golb and the Lich is ultimately revealed to be.
