From 1973 on the ...I have a 39A that i got from my father-in law. I was trying to find out the manufacture date, but the first character of the serial number is odd. (see attached image). It looks like it could be a D or a P, but it is missing part of the letter. I don't see it on your list but did find it over at the Marlin Firearms Collector Association site. On their list compared to yours between 1957 and 1964 there are several lettered differences as noted.

Sep 9, 2012 · There are 3 sheets now. One is mainly dating the guns and some production numbers for 1881,1888,1889,1891's and production years for the pistols and Ballards. The next 2 sheets are the rest of the Marlin guns and their production years. Mostly, center-fire on page 1 and rim-fire and shotguns on page 2.

HEY GUYS--I was in a pawn shop today & saw an old 39A .22 rifle on the rack. The serial number was 1221. There was not a letter prefix in front of the 1221. Can someone tell me what year this rifle was manafactured? I probably should have bought this rifle--the price tag was $295 but the man said he'd take $250 since it was a consignment rifle.

The S prefix likely was first used in the 1925-26 era, based on serial number ranges for the non and S prefixed rifles. The HS prefix was used beginning in 1932, until the introduction of the model 39A in 1939.
