Aug 29, 2016 · The Sportsman has a "crimped tube" that only holds two rounds whereas the regular 11-48 will hold 4 rounds (plus one in the chamber). I picked up my old 11-48 at a gun show many years ago. I think I paid $50 for it and it is still in great condition. The code on the barrel indicates it was made in 1950.

While using it hunting, the handle to the bolt flew out, I found the bolt, re-inserted it, but could not rack the bolt back to load the gun. Sportsman 48 Will Not Cycle. Hello! I'm working on a 1953 vintage Remington Sportsman 48, 12 gauge that fires, but does not cycle. The barrel does retract into the receiver, but the bolt appears to reach a high-friction point about two-thirds of the way through its travel. I've cleaned and lightly lubed the recoil spring and friction rings.I have a Sportsman 48 in 16 and also an early model 1100 in 16. I likes 'em both, but the 1100 is a bit more versatile. The 11-48 works best with at least 1 oz shot and a good velocity. The 1100 will cycle down to 3/4 oz.
