AFAIK, Tastyworks does not charge this, the exchange does. I believe the $1 is actually just for them. So if anything this is more transparent, not "hidden". I've not seen extra fees (apart from the one that is publicized) being charged anywhere else when not trading options on VIX, SPX etc. You can check CBOE website.
