I'm just seeing this thread for the first time, but I was going to comment that it could either be a failure in the VTM-4 system OR a different failure that has disabled the VTM-4 system causing the light to illuminate. In your case, it was obviously the latter. The VTM-4 light would almost always come on after driving between 100 feet and a mile. Just adding here, what worked for me, finally. Scan showed 23-01 knock sensor fail (among other things) I changed the VTM-4 fluid, and replaced the VTM-4 oil temp sensor. VTM-4 LIGHT is the 4x4 option you can use when your in the auto shift gears 1 and 2. When you put the shifter in 1 or 2 gear, you can push the VTM-4 button on dash and you will engage the 4 wheel drive constently. If you switch out of 1st or 2nd gear it will disengage automatically. By the way, when Check engine light and VTM-4 light were on, I drove the car couple of days like that (the service advisor suggested that it is safe to drive) and haven't noticed any difference in car's behavior. VTM-4 is variable torque management tho so related to traction control or torque vectoring AWD if they had it back then. I doubt misfires would cause TC/AWD issues. It might be a programming in the computer that disables it.
