By far the best place to find a sledgehammer is a melee weapons stash - survivor homes (the ones that are all boarded up), or annotated maps that label houses are really good places to look. Otherwise, warehouse and factory locations with steel shelving units are good. Wooden crates in those locations have a chance too.

Practical but irrational approach. Possible mods if could be: Jump over with a Horse. Smash it with a Road roller or a Tank. Build a Bridge over it. Dig a Tunnel under it. Use Hot air baloon for transportation. Drive another vehicle at the other side. Transfer the load between vehicles.

What I'd do is this. First backup your save (c/user/project zomboid/saves) somewhere. Just copy the folder of your save. Then start the game from steam with -debug in the launch parameters. Click on the new icon, ingame, on your left. It's a fly. Go to item list and spawn a new sledgehammer. Equip it and see if that works.
